    • Richard Kirby was part of the first Quaker meeting in North America, which took place at William Allen's house in Sandwich, Mass in 1656. He suffered numerous fines on account of his Quaker leanings, which probably led to the decision to relocate to Dartmouth in the 1670's. His two sisters were publicly whipped for disturbing Puritan church services.
